VPL's Awesome Book Clubs

Summery days bring warm breezes and long sunsets, perfect for slipping away with a novel. Dip into a thought-provoking read or sneak away for some drama and suspense with one of the bookclubs offered through Vaughan Public Libraries. Members meet once a month to chat and go deeper together. Copies of books will be available to borrow at the information desk in the following libraries. *Each club will be following a different reading schedule.

Civic Centre Resource Library

7:00 - 8:30 pm

July 9 - The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

August 13 - Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Join the bookclub that may leave you thinking long after you’ve gone home. Running since May 2016, this group of 10-11 adults meet once a month to discuss books that represent some of life’s biggest questions and injustices. Coffee and refreshments will be served and newcomers are always welcome. And if you’ve ever had the itch to write your own novel, talk to the leader, Daniel, about other programs available at the Civic Centre Resource Library.

Ansley Grove Library

7:00 - 8:30 pm

June 26 - My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

July 31 - Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

August 28 - The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa

Read the month’s selection at your leisure, then bring your thoughts and impressions to discuss with the group over coffee. This is a friendly place and it’s alright to just observe. Feel free to bring a dessert to share.

Bathurst Clark Resource Library

7:00 - 8:00 pm

June 25 - Speaking My Truth by Shelagh Rogers et al.

July 30 - The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

August 27 - Don't I Know You? by Marni Jackson

You are welcome even if you haven’t read the book yet. Join the friendly, open-ended discussion about topics and questions that arise from the material. There is never any pressure to participate during this informal table discussion. Teenagers are welcome too, and can also participate in separate teen book clubs (that welcome adults too).

Vellore Village Library

7:00 - 8:00 pm

July 11 - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Aug 8 - The Martian by Andy Weir

This cozy group meets in a study room at the back of the library for a guided discussion of that month’s read. The library encourages guests to register ahead of time at the information desk, where you will receive a copy of the selected title to read beforehand. You will also be added to a group email list to be notified of any program changes.

Woodbridge Library

7:00 - 8:30 pm

June 24 - The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine

July 29 - A Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn

This bookclub will be focusing on the triumphs and tribulations of women in two novels described as both pleasurable and perplexing. Come prepared to glance into the lives of strong characters and life events. Call the information desk ahead of time to register.

“Check it out, you just might find yourself feeling invested” Daniel Scarcello, bookclub leader, Civic Centre Resource Library

So light some candles, get comfy, and slip away with your thoughts. These book clubs run year-round so you just might find a place to settle in long-term.
